When someone in your city searches for your service, do they find you — or your competitors? Local SEO is how you make sure they find you first. And unlike paid ads, the traffic keeps coming 24/7 without paying per click.

Step 1: Optimise Your Google Business Profile (GBP)

Your Google Business Profile is the most important local SEO asset you have. It's what appears in the "map pack" — those 3 businesses shown with a map at the top of local searches. Ranking in the map pack gets you more calls than ranking #1 in organic results.

Complete every single field:

Step 2: Get Reviews Systematically

Reviews are the #1 local ranking factor. More 5-star reviews = higher ranking = more traffic = more reviews. But collecting them manually is painful. Automate it.

The process: After every job or service, send a text or email with a direct link to your Google review page (find this in your GBP dashboard). Make it as easy as possible — most people who are happy will leave a review if you just ask and make it one click away.

Respond to every review — especially negative ones. Your response is more important than the review itself. A professional, helpful response to a bad review converts more readers than a dozen generic 5-star reviews.

"We took a client from 12 reviews to 94 reviews in 6 months using a simple post-service text message. Their local ranking went from page 2 to position 2 in the map pack."

Step 3: Build Local Citations

Citations are mentions of your business name, address, and phone number (NAP) on other websites. Consistency matters — if your address is "32 Baker St" on one site and "32 Baker Street" on another, Google gets confused.

Priority citation sites: Yelp, Yellow Pages, Bing Places, Apple Maps, Facebook, TripAdvisor (if relevant), Foursquare, industry-specific directories.

Use a tool like Moz Local or BrightLocal to audit and fix inconsistencies. Inconsistent NAP data is one of the most common reasons businesses don't rank locally.

Step 4: Create Location Pages

If you serve multiple cities, create a dedicated page for each. A plumber serving London, Essex, and Kent should have separate pages for each area — not one page saying "we serve London, Essex, and Kent."

Each location page needs: unique content about that area (not just swapped city names), local testimonials from clients in that area, embedded Google Map, and local schema markup.

Step 5: On-Page SEO for Local Keywords

Your homepage and service pages need to be optimised for your main local keywords. For a dentist in Manchester:

Step 6: Get Local Backlinks

Links from local websites tell Google you're an established part of the local business community. How to get them:

How Long Does Local SEO Take?

Honest answer: 60–90 days to see meaningful movement, 6 months to fully dominate. Google needs time to verify your business, index your content, and trust your reviews. But unlike paid ads, the results compound — every month you rank higher, you get more traffic, more calls, more reviews, which makes you rank even higher.
